New Menu’s and Old Haunts
It was my birthday recently and again, my brother came down from Singapore to invite us all out for a Steak Dinner. We drove round to the usual places, the ship, Victoria Station, but somehow were not happy with something each time and wound up at one of our frequents haunts, an oldie but a newie, if that makes sense. A relatively new establishment, which we frequent… that kind of sense.
So we ordered our usuals, Chicken Parmigiana, Sea Bass and Potatoes and for me, well, I was not going to chicken out on my annual birthday steak dinner. So I ordered the only steak menu item available, the flank, and I gotta say, it is seriously an underappreciated cut of beef… the thigh. In saying so, I almost got a heart attack, considering how heavy the meal and greasy the prep work turned out to be. I order it medium well and couldn’t have been more satisfied, while on my birthday and living it large, like a best-selling author in NYC amongst his/her elite circle of friends, as is said, living-it-up at the best fine dining steak houses in the Greater Manhattan Area.
As you might recall, I almost had a heart-attack by the time I was done with my steak and potatoes. Still, a note on the presentation is afforded, It had been cut for me into bite sized chunks, that’s when I started to think Oh God… the menu has changed, and I in fact eat here all the time. Reality struck, this is a middle class folk restaurant in PJ where people come for the food and chef and not the label. The steak was good but I had to rush home right after, and did not have time for their wide variety of cakes(as it is my birthday) because I started to get the runs — must be the grease. As a result, I will not be mentioning the name of this cafe to anyone, not at this time anyway. But, one final note on the food and the new menu.
The food had never been any bad, but I guess they have to change it up once and awhile. The Sea Bass is still a staple but the flank he must get from a contact that arrived with the new Chef. All in all no complaints, but it was a double shot of Glenfiddich for me just before bed, just to have that very rich, very savory flank steak dinner sit well for the night to follow. Satisfied but not content. I guess another year is laying in wait.
