Where to get the perfect pint
A pint is traditionally the staple method by which you consume a nice cold one. Mostly in Europe do you wash down a heavy day of hard labor at a local pub with a pint of your favorite brew. But, as times change so too do the drinking habits. Not even in North America is a pint recognized as the favored way to devour an icy cold beverage.
All across Asia you will find drinking stations, those with the most rustic appeals, where drinking is accompanied with your favorite local delicacies. In Myanmar these places are in fact highlighted as the places to be and are in fact called Drink Stations. These drink stations normally take refuge on the corner store of a long line of shop houses all with other goods and services at your disposal.
In Asia some of the more popular brews are Tiger, Carlsberg and Heineken, where road side food accompanies one of these three branded alcoholic drinks and are normally served up in mugs, poured from 1.25 ml bottles, good enough for 2 ½ glasses or in this case, mugs. Sure there are more upmarket places to consume an icy cold one in the heart of the city wherever you may be visiting in Asia, and served from a tap in tall icy cold glasses, whereby the famous euphemism, “Enjoy Responsibly,” is coined.
But, if you seek something more authentic and more up to speed with the locals, you really do need to find yourself in the aforementioned Myanmar, where a favorite to the locals, served via tap and in old fashioned mugs, the brew aptly named Myanmar is up for grabs at your local drink station. It is and has always been quite the injection of cultural insurgence, because up until recently only men were allowed to drink around these parts. Today you will find women apart of the local drinks culture.
So back to the point in question, I will be in Myanmar drinking an icy cold Myanmar, poured from a tap and into a mug away from the traditionalist pint and still feel as if I am amongst the most avid of travelers’ seeking to quench my thirst alongside some of the local delicacies.
Try Buthi Kyaw(Gourd Fritters) and/or Shan Tofu(Burmese style Fried Tofu) with your brew, really does sit well, when washed down with an icy cold Myanmar Beer.
